Key Apple Inc supplier Foxconn Technology Group on Monday pledged to invest Rs 1,600 crore in setting up a mobile component manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram district, which will provide jobs for 6,000 people.
Karnataka Minister of Infrastructure Development MB Patil and IT/BT minister Priyank Kharge met with Foxconn chairman Young Liu to discuss projects for which the company is keen to invest in the southern state. The company, a major supplier for Apple Inc, recently proposed a second manufacturing unit in Karnataka, which would create 14,000 jobs.
Karnataka Minister for Commerce & Industries, Infrastructure MB Patil said in a post on Tuesday that International Battery Company (IBC) has signed an investment pact worth 80 billion rupees ($971.89 million) with state to build a battery manufacturing facility.
ET had earlier reported that the Vedanta-Foxconn joint venture had inked a memorandum of understanding with GF and European chipmaker STMicroelectronics for the technology to fabricate semiconductor chips. Sources had then told ET that the Indian government had also suggested both GD and STMicro take an equity stake in the partnership they were planning with the Vedanta Foxconn combine.
