Every week, news of layoff of staffers in global technology firms are making the headlines. This week, reports of LinkedIn’s plans to sack around 600 employees came, while it coincided with Meta’s decision to layoff around 8,000 staffers globally. In recent months, the intensity of mass layoffs has increased, creating anxiety among staffers. For instance, around 10,000 staffers of Oracle lost their jobs this year as the company undertook a mass layoff globally for focusing on AI infrastructure investment.

For years, global industrial companies largely viewed India through the lens of manufacturing, localisation, and cost efficiency while core engineering, product development, and strategic decision-making typically remained concentrated in headquarters across Europe or North America.

It is quite fair to argue that the model is steadily evolving.

It was at a time when labour costs were competitive, engineering talent was available, and the execution-heavy work could travel across time zones without much friction.
