Chip industry faces shortage of 700,000 workers by 2030, offering India a big opportunity: IESA chief Ashok Chandak

The global semiconductor industry is staring at a shortage of at least 700,000 skilled workers by 2030, a gap that industry leaders say presents a major opportunity for India, as it ramps up its chip manufacturing and design ambitions. India is pushing ahead with large-scale investments under the semiconductor mission and state-level incentive policies, making talent the next big bottleneck the country must solve. “Worldwide, there is a problem, and India has the opportunity to fill the void,” said Ashok Chandak, the president of the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA).

Tata Electronics’ Dholera fab to start commercial ops by FY 2029-2030: MeitY

Tata Electronics is expected to start commercial operations of its Dholera semiconductor fab facility by the financial year 2029-2030. This was informed by Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada in response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha. “The production capacity of this fab will be 50,000 wafer starts per month, which inter-alia includes 28nm Technology node as well. This facility is expected to start the commercial operations by FY 2029-30,” Prasada said. Tata Electronics did not respond to TechCircle’s query. As per earlier media reports, the first chip production is expected to begin by December 2026.

NTT e-launches Bengaluru data centre, commits additional 2,400 crore for Devanahalli campus

Bengaluru NTT announced the elaunch of its data centre at Devanahalli on Wednesday. Karnataka is a major hub for NTT, a $100 billion global conglomerate operating 160 data centres worldwide. Currently, NTT has 150plus MW of Al-driven data centre capacity live globally, while in India it operates 22 live data centres, with several more under construction. It has three data centres in Bengaluru with an investment of Rs 1,700 crore and committed an additional Rs 2,400 crore for a new campus at Devanahalli. The centre is equipped with a dedicated 220 kV power substation to ensure uninter A MAJOR HUB. Priyank promises eco-friendly data centres

IT/BT Minister Priyank Kharge promised to implement an environment-friendly approach for establishing data centres in the state. He was speaking at the 8th ASSO- CHAM Smart Data Centres & Cloud Infrastructure Conclave 2025 on Wednesday. “We will have infrastructure that is en- ergy-secure, renewable energy- aligned and water secure. We will aggressively reduce car- bon footprint and incorporate new technologies such as liq- uid cooling, advanced thermal management, and other next- generation cooling solutions,” he stressed.

The Karnataka government on Wednesday signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) one with Coinbase India and another with Refroid Technologies to promote blockchain development, cybersecurity and energy-efficient Al infrastructure in the state. Karnataka’s IT-BT minister Priyank Kharge said, Through these partnerships, we aim to unlock new economic opportunities for our youth, build strong technical capability, and move rapidly toward our vision of making Karnataka a global pioneer in digital innovation.
