The government s semiconductor push in the last 18 months has turned India into a rising force in the critical sector, despite missing opportunities to develop a local ecosystem for decades due to the lack of a political vision, said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, minister of state for electronics and information technology, on Thursday.
India had in the past missed the bus on electronics and semiconductors and it is the current government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi which is rebuilding India s electronics ecosystem and pushing the country to become one of the worlds fastest growing electronics manufacturers, said Union Minister of State Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
While Americans purchase these consumer electronics at staggering rates, the U.S. accounts for just 12% of global semiconductor manufacturing capacity down from 37% in 1990, according to figures from the U.S. Semiconductor Industry Association.
Ommic is a semiconductor company based near Paris, employing just over 100 people. US chip maker Macom Technology agreed earlier this year to acquire Ommic and said it would make the French site its European semiconductor centre.
Foxconn is also in talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat as it eyes entry into India s semiconductor sector. On Friday, PM Modi will inaugurate a conference in Gandhinagar wherein Foxconn Chairman Young Liu will also be present.
Indeed, as this article was being written, in retaliation over semiconductor curbs by the USA, China restricted exports of gallium and germaniumboth key for semiconductor manufacturing. Incidentally, days after this announcement, one possible fallout emerged from India.
