Viasat, a global leader in satellite communications, and WiSig Networks, an IIT Hyderabad–incubated 5G/6G deep-tech company, today announced a collaboration to bring a new 3GPP Release 17 NB-IoT Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) chipset and module into Viasat’s L-band satellite IoT ecosystem.

India is preparing to enter the next phase of its semiconductor journey with the launch of Semicon 2.0, a strategy designed to strengthen the country’s position in the global semiconductor industry by focusing on chip design, semiconductor equipment, materials, research, and talent development.

India’s semiconductor manufacturing sector is set for a major boost. New rules exempt imports for Special Economic Zones from quality checks. This will speed up the setup of chip fabrication plants and assembly units. Companies can now import necessary equipment and materials without delays. Compliance with Indian standards will only be required when products enter the domestic market.

India has achieved a massive total power capacity of over 446 gigawatts, but this may not be enough to anchor its semiconductor ambitions, as semiconductor fabrication demands a level of grid perfection, environmental stability, and resource volume that the current infrastructure may not be structurally equipped to deliver seamlessly.

The electronics sector exemplifies this transformation. Exports surged eightfold from Rs 0.38 lakh crore to Rs 3.3 lakh crore, while production expanded six times to Rs 11.3 lakh crore. Mobile phone exports alone skyrocketed 163 times, from a modest Rs 0.016 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 2.6 lakh crore in 2026. This boom, driven by the “Production Linked Incentive” scheme and semiconductor investments worth Rs 1.64 lakh crore, has created more than 25 lakh jobs and positioned India as global manufacturingHub
